So this week we looked at adjectives , comparatives and superlatives.


COMPARATIVES
SHORT ADJECTIVES (1 SYLLABLE) + ER
Old – older sweet – sweeter tall –taller
Spelling big- bigger hot –hotter
SUPERLATIVES
SHORT ADJECTIVES (1 SYLLABLE) the + EST
Old – oldest sweet – sweetest tall –tallest

Spelling big- biggest hot –hottest


Adjectives in –y ( usually, two syllables - ier)
Happy – happier lucky –luckier

Adjectives in –y ( usually, two syllables; the - iest

Happy – happiest lucky –luckiest

Longer adjectives with MORE
Interesting - more interesting beautiful – more beautiful

Longer adjectives with the MOST
Interesting - the most interesting
beautiful – the most beautiful


Irregulars
Good – better- the best
bad – worse- the worst
Far- further- the furthest

AFTER COMPARATIVES WE USE “THAN”
John is OLDER THAN Mike. English is MORE DIFFICULT THAN French.

AFTER SUPERLATIVES USE “in”
He’s the oldest student in the class. Which is the longest river in the world?


So now you could compare for example : two towns : London/ Paris; Cagliari /Sassari etc.
foods : pizza/broccoli, etc.4
people : Mike/John;

Then we also looked at verb patterns - these just need to be learnt!!! NO secrets!

Verb patterns

INFINiTIVE WITH “TO”
A) GOING TO WOULD LIKE TO USED TO
WANT TO HOPE TO PLAN TO
DECIDE TO OFFER TO PROMISE TO
REFUSE TO INTEND TO

INFINITIVE WITHOUT “TO”
A) AFTER AUXILIARIES AND MODALS
DO, DOES, DID I don’t like eating mushrooms!
CAN, COULD, MAY, MIGHT, WOULD, WILL , etc
I think I’ll go to London


FORM IN +ING
A) ENJOY STOP FINISH LIKE/LOVE* I ENJOY STUDYING English!
But remember
I’d love to come to your party! Would you like to have a coffee!

After a preposition ( at/of/ with etc. ) use the * ing form

I’m thinking OF getting a new phone.
John’ s looking forward TO going to France.
John wasn’t interested in meeting the film star.
